Gudeg Jogja
Gudeg Jogja (Stewed nangka/unripe jack fruit)
Gudeg Jogja is a staple food for people living in the Central Java area of Indonesia. It was a dish, like many others, where grandmothers compete for the best eggnogs recipe, Southern American's for their fried chicken and the Chinese, for their dumplings. The competition for the best recipe has brought upon uniqueness to every Gudeg offered in different restaurants. This dish mainly consists of unripe jack fruit, palm sugar, and coconut milk, which is stewed for many hours before it could finally be served. Other complimentary ingredients and aromatics such as garlic, shallots, candlenut, coriander seed, galangal, bay leaves, and teak leaves are added to increase complexity and the flavour profile of Gudeg. Although it is a staple food, not few are known to dislike the flavor and texture of this particular dish. Many describe it as "odd, too sweet, unappealing, etc."

House of Raminten
I first tried this particular dish when I visited my elder brother, which is partaking his studies in Yogyakarta, a city famous for their Gudeg. My first Gudeg is from, House of Raminten, one of the many famous restaurants for their traditional Javanese cuisines. Although both my mother and brother have warned me of its peculiar taste and texture, I insisted to give it a shot.
It was 1 AM when I arrived, still crowded and full of tourists. I sat down on one of the tables called "lesehan", which is a short table where people sit on the floor to enjoy their meal. After a quick 5 minutes of waiting, there comes my Gudeg, dark and dry, served on top of hot rice with a side of hard-boiled egg, beef skin and tempeh (an Indonesian soy product). I was expecting a whole hearty meal but was given the exact opposite. It was cold, partially mush, and terribly sweet. It has nothing to prove, just its overwhelming sweetness.

To be fair to everyone, I had just arrived in Yogyakarta at 11PM that day, extremely tired and hungry. I could probably just my misfortune to have tasted Gudeg with the state I am in that day. For those who are in Indonesia, especially in Java Island, I dare you all to try this dish. If many of you guys love it, I might even have a second try.
